A century ago Wofford College athletics teams chose the Boston Terrier as their mascot. The small but tenacious and fierce dog is full of intelligence and energy making it an ideal mascot for the 1,690 undergraduates who call Wofford home. Founded in 1854, Wofford College offers 26 majors fields of study and is nationally known for the strength of its academic program, outstanding faculty, study abroad participation and successful graduates. The college scores among the best in the country on the National Survey of Student Engagement, which measures high-impact, transformative learning experiences. At Wofford these experiences include internships and research opportunities with scientific, corporate and non-profit organizations across the globe; community-based learning on a local, national and international level; a host of co-curricular opportunities on campus; and study abroad preparation and programming. The Open Doors Report validates the college's success in the area of study abroad. In 2016 the college was ranked #9 in the nation among baccalaureate institutions for the percentage of students who study abroad for credit, and for the past 20 years, the college consistently has ranked in the top 10 in the nation for study abroad participation. Student and residence life at Wofford includes exciting opportunities to participate in one of the colleges Greek-letter fraternities or sororities, competitive intramurals, a diverse selection of clubs, student publications and a housing plan that helps students progress from first year through fourth in a close-knit community that builds a sense of personal responsibility and ultimately independence. The residence life experience culminates in a final year in The Village, beautiful Charlestonian-style apartments designed to help students transition from college student to successful graduate. Wofford also offers the college and upstate South Carolina community exciting Division I athletics. It's easy to catch Terrier fever when one out of every five Wofford students is an NCAA student-athlete. Wofford doesn't take the term student-athlete lightly. In 2016 9 Wofford teams posted an NCAA Graduation Success Rate of 100, and all 14 teams scored above the national average. After taking advantage of four years of opportunities designed to help them engage and explore the world, Wofford students are prepared for what's next. To ensure that, the college provides professional development, career services, real-world experience and even entrepreneurial guidance through The Space in the Mungo Center. During 2014 the college adopted a new strategic vision that has Wofford reimagining what it means to be a premier, innovative and distinctive national liberal arts college defined by excellence, engagement and transformation in its commitment to prepare superior students for meaningful lives as citizens, leaders and scholars. That vision is already becoming a reality. Jerry Richardson, a 1959 Wofford graduate and the owner and founder of the NFLs Carolina Panthers, donated two new buildings on campus: the Rosalind Salenger Richardson Center for the Arts (opening spring 2017) and the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium (opening summer 2017). In addition, the college recently completed the Stewart H. Johnson Greek Village that is setting a new standard in diversity and healthy social interactions.
