The Honors Program at UT Tyler provides intellectually enriching opportunities for academically talented and motivated freshmen at UT Tyler. The emphasis is on small classes, enriched coursework, independent learning, speaking and writing, research within the discipline, sharing ideas, and discovering new worlds beyond the campus.Honors students will receive personalized academic advising, honors courses with top faculty, special programming, opportunities for research, and a variety of international study and travel abroad programs. Upon completion of the program and graduation, students will receive a special Honors designation on their transcripts.Global Awareness Through Education (GATE) is a two-year residential learning program designed for incoming freshmen where students live together, take enhanced core curriculum classes and participate in on- and off-campus activities that are globally engaging and culturally diverse. GATE offers freshman and sophomore students the knowledge and critical-thinking skills necessary to succeed in our increasingly global community. GATE is made up of three major components:Core Curriculum Instead of completing the traditional core curriculum, GATE students will be enrolled in GATE-specific sections of 10 Core Curriculum courses that have been redesigned with a global focus. GATE students will enroll in two GATE courses each fall and spring semester of their freshman and sophomore years and will complete the remaining two courses while studying abroad during the summer after their sophomore year. Cultural ActivitiesAll GATE students will participate in on and off campus cultural activities. These activities include: a global lecture series, international film festival, concerts, service opportunities. Other off-campus trips will be offered to museums and live performances.Study AbroadThe GATE Program culminates in a 5-week study abroad experience the summer after the sophomore year.
