Founded in 1889 as Colorado's teachers college, the University of Northern Colorado is a comprehensive baccalaureate and public doctoral research university. This Carnegie Community Engagement-classified university fuses its history for innovative teaching with transformative, hands-on education through programs across six colleges. Home to about 13,000 students, the university offers more than 2,000 academic courses annually, including highly regarded programs in performing and visual arts, business, nursing, sport and exercise science and education. Its 236-acre home campus is located in Greeley, Colorado, about one hour north of Denver, with extended campus locations in Loveland, Denver and Colorado Springs. The university's Outdoor Pursuits program provides students with gear from bikes to snowboards--free of charge--so they can explore Colorado adventures close-to-home and far afield. Education at UNC stimulates the mind, awakens creativity and opens doors to possibilities. It's what drives UNC students, faculty and alumni to engage in the community and around the globe. Large enough to offer meaningful opportunities in a doctoral research university environment, UNC is also small enough to give students an education rich in connections with faculty and peers. Our students work shoulder-to-shoulder with expert faculty in research labs and in the field, and our faculty combine scholarly work with teaching in a strong teacher-scholar setting. Whether they're tracking variable stars and studying the formation of the Milky Way, or measuring the impact of exercise on cancer rehabilitation, faculty share new knowledge in the classroom, field and labs. Anthropology students gain hands-on biological anthropology experience with faculty-led study of skeletons in Greece, and special education students gain practical experience by offering a student-led parent respite program in Greeley. At UNC, learning is fused with doing, and education is paired with research because of our institutional history of innovative education. UNC students choose from more than 150 clubs and organization, 17 club sports, 12 intramurals, 20 Greek organizations and 19 NCAA Division I athletics teams. Students proudly wear blue and gold and identify as "Bears" through athletic and academic competitions.
