University of New Mexico

Founded in 1889 as New Mexico's flagship institution, The University of New Mexico now occupies nearly 800 acres near old Route 66 in the heart of Albuquerque, a metropolitan area of more than 500,000 people. UNM awarded 6,159 degrees and certificates in 2014-2015. UNM offers more than 350 active degree and certificate programs. There are 65 associate, 58 credit-bearing certificates, 97 baccalaureate, 78 master's, and 47 doctoral degree programs. While UNM is a leader in academics, UNM students are leaders of their campus and communities. The University of New Mexico is home to more than 300 student organizations, from cultural and religious to academic, political, and service-oriented groups. UNM is the only Hispanic-Serving Institution in the U.S. that is also classified a Carnegie Research University with Very High Activity. Recently, Hispanic Business Magazine ranked four University schools among the top 10. The list included: UNM School of Law (7th); UNM Anderson School of Management (4th) ; UNM School of Medicine (7th); and the UNM School of Engineering (6th). UNM School of Law is ranked 60th overall and 11th in clinical training. UNM College of Fine Arts is ranked 48th, with its photography program ranked fifth in the nation. The engineering program is ranked 82nd nationally, with electrical engineering ranked at 66th, and Nuclear Engineering at 15th. The Health Sciences Center is the states largest integrated health care treatment, research and education organization. U.S. News and World Report's 2015 edition of "America's Best Graduate Schools" ranks the UNM School of Medicine 45th in primary care and 78th in research, while specific areas also rank again among the top 10 - rural medicine (2nd) and family medicine (9th). Additionally, in health disciplines, UNM's nursing/midwifery program is ranked fifth in the nation. UNM research injects millions of dollars into New Mexico's economy, funds new advancements in healthcare, and augments teaching - giving students valuable hands-on training in state-of-the art laboratories. Among the Universitys outstanding research units are the Center for Advanced Research Computing, Cancer Center, Center for High Technology Materials, Design Planning Assistance Center, Mind Research Network, and the New Mexico Engineering Research Institute The abundance of opportunities, and New Mexicos 310 days of sunshine each year, encourages students to explore the lifestyle of New Mexico. Culture, art, adventure, and recreation are around every corner. Students hike, bike, snowboard, and ski the Sandia Mountains and raft the Rio Grande River. Santa Fe and Taos are just to the north, White Sands National Monument and Carlsbad Caverns to the south.
