Since 1895, the University of Minnesota Duluth has provided a vital role in Minnesota as an educational institution, research facility, and community partner. UMD's academic excellence, living-learning experiences, respect for diversity, and scenic beauty make it a unique and thriving campus.With an enrollment of 11,018 students, UMD is renowned for its academic achievement. Five colleges offer 93 undergraduate majors and graduate programs in 28 different fields. In its doctoral curriculum are the Educational Teaching and Learning EdD, the Integrated Biosciences PhD, and the Water Resources Science PhD. A School of Medicine program, a College of Pharmacy program, and other additional doctoral programs are provided in cooperation with the UM Minneapolis campus. UMD's community outreach centers include the Freshwater Research and Policy Institute, the Natural Resources Research Institute, and the Center for Economic Development.Among a distinctive group of universities designated as Land and Sea Grant institutions, UMD is increasingly recognized for innovative research. UMD's legacy for research is far-reaching. Our graduates include 2012 Nobel Prize recipient and chemist, Brian Kobilka.UMD knows that diversity is crucial in preparing students for a global society. Located on a hill overlooking Lake Superior, UMD's vibrant and inviting campus boasts of 50 classroom, laboratory, and residence hall buildings as well as a 44-acre nature center. UMD's 22 connected buildings make the campus a leading university in terms of accessibility. UMD is a modern campus. Nine buildings constructed since 2000 grace every corner of campus. UMD students get involved in over 258 student organizations and our outdoor recreation facilities are used by 95 percent of the student body. UMD offers some of the most varied and comprehensive recreational programming in the country. The campus is minutes from off-campus skiing, hiking, canoeing, and other outdoor adventures. From art galleries and theatre to music and events, the city of Duluth presents a world of activities for students.The university supports 14 mens and womens sports in Division II and mens and womens hockey in Division I. We have won two national championships in football, five national championships in womens hockey, one in mens hockey, and have five Hobey Baker winners, more than any other university in the United States.Our students have a reputation for being hard-working.
