The University of Maine (UMaine) offers the academic opportunities you'd expect from a major research institution with the close-knit feel of a small college. The University of Maine is Maine's flagship university, making it the largest and most research-comprehensive university in the state, with a firm foundation in the liberal arts. UMaine is the state's only public university with a research classification awarded by the Carnegie Foundation, conducting nationally and internationally recognized work in advanced materials, marine sciences, climate change, environmental studies, forestry, engineering and aquaculture. It also is the leader for graduate education in Maine. The Center for Undergraduate Research fosters academic connections between students and faculty through interest-driven projects in the Maine Business School and our colleges: Engineering; Liberal Arts and Sciences; Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture; and Education and Human Development; and Honors. At UMaine, students are given the chance to work with renowned scholars on projects for NASA, the U.S. military and other organizations. Graduates have gone on to win Pulitzer and Nobel Peace Prizes, and work for the United Nations and such companies as Google, General Electric and the LA Times. Students are able to learn hands-on by helping wildlife experts tag black bear cubs, traversing Antarctic ice sheets, using zebrafish to conduct medical research, studying on Bloomberg Terminals in our Capital Markets Training Laboratory, working with marine species at our Darling Marine Center, and honing pre-teaching skills in our new state-of-the-art virtual classrooms with avatar simulation. Students are not only given the chance for academic development, but the opportunity to explore the world around them. The outdoor adventure center, Maine Bound, provides students with 15 miles of trails behind camps and guide-led trips around Maine such as hiking, rock climbing, kayaking and snowshoeing. With Acadia National Park, Sugarloaf Mountain, Mount Katahdin and Portland, Maine near by, the possibilities of adventure are endless.
