St. John's University

Founded in 1870, St. Johns is a Catholic and Vincentian University dedicated to ensuring student success through innovative courses, dynamic study abroad opportunities, and service activities locally, nationally, and globally. Twenty-eight students have won Fulbright grants since 2012; others have received such distinguished awards as Marshall and Truman Scholarships. Students come to St. Johns from nearly 47 states and 123 countries. They pursue bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees in the arts, business, education, pharmacy, and the natural and applied sciences. More than 92 percent of our professors hold a Ph.D. or comparable terminal degree in their field. The Universitys 17-to-one student/faculty ratio assures personal attention in the classroom.St. Johns offers the power of learning in a global city and all the advantages of an international reach. Students benefit from the cultural and professional resources available at campuses in Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island, NY, and in Rome, Italy; locations in Paris, France, and Seville, Spain; and our study abroad sites around the world. Through courses like Discover New York--part of the Universitys core curriculum--classes are held in historic venues like Central Park, Ellis Island, and Wall Street. Students experience other nations, languages, and cultures through our Global Studies options. The Freshman Passport Program allows new students to spend two weeks of their first semester at the Rome campus. And by participating in Discover the World, they can earn up to 15 credits living and learning in three European cities in a single semester. In fact, roughly 30 percent of our students take classes abroad by the time they graduate.Helping others is part of the St. Johns experience. Students log more than 100,000 service hours in 125 city agencies and at 11 sites on four continents. Through Academic Service-Learning, they gain real-world experience with course-related volunteer activities in nearby communities. Campus Ministry also engages students in distributing food to the homeless; assisting at soup kitchens and other agencies; and participating in service "plunges" around the world. The Universitys Vincentian mission also is evident in programs like our Ozanam Scholars, a four-year scholarship program that prepares undergraduates to address global poverty and injustice through teaching, service, and research.Campus life at St. Johns is varied and vibrant. With more than 180 clubs and organizations, students have a wide choice of activities. They keep fit at St. Johns state-of-the-art athletic facilities. Of course, they also enjoy the excitement of Red Storm fever-cheering for the Universitys 17, NCAA Division I mens and womens athletic teams. On and off campus, the Red Storm is known as New York Citys team. Impressed by this preparation, employers recruit St. John's students on campus each year.
