Southern Methodist University

SMU cultivates well-rounded leaders with a strong liberal arts foundation and a comprehensive curriculum. The University offers nationally competitive undergraduate, graduate and professional programs through seven degree-granting schools in humanities and sciences; business; engineering; performing, visual and communication arts; education and human development; law; and theology. Distinctive multidisciplinary undergraduate programs include international studies, environmental science and human rights. Also offered are an honors program with individualized studies, joint programs with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, study abroad through 150 programs in 50 countries, funded student research and service learning opportunities. SMU is one of the few universities in the United States to have a voting student member on its Board of Trustees. SMU-in-Taos (New Mexico) offers credit courses and includes excavation of a 13th-century Indian pueblo. One of the top collegiate lecture programs in the nation brings national and international leaders to campus. Student leadership opportunities include internships, community service and involvement in 200 student organizations. SMUs campus is five miles from downtown Dallas, a center of commerce and culture offering opportunities for careers locally and throughout the world. SMUs Meadows Museum houses one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of Spanish art outside of Spain. The George W. Bush Presidential Center, which opened on the SMU campus in spring 2013, consists of a library, museum and independent institute that conducts research and programs on national and international issues. Students have opportunities to serve as interns and participate in special programs for discussions. In 2013-14, SMU was beginning its transition to the Residential Commons living-and-learning experience at 11 Commons throughout the campus. And theres always the possibility that a former U.S. president will visit a class.
