Established in 1890, Savannah State University (SSU) is the oldest public historically black college or university (HBCU) in Georgia and the oldest institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah. The universitys 4,900 students select majors from 27 undergraduate and five graduate programs in three colleges; Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration and Sciences and Technology and the School of Teacher Education.The verdant, 201-acre campus sits adjacent to a salt-marsh estuary, minutes away from historic downtown Savannah and the Atlantic Ocean.Savannah State University is one of only two institutions in the University System of Georgia to offer an undergraduate degree in forensic science with concentrations in chemistry and biology.Savannah State was the first HBCU and the first institution in Georgia to offer the homeland security and emergency management bachelors degree, which prepares responders for natural and man-made disasters.Teacher education degree programs have returned to Savannah State. Students majoring in biology, mathematics, civil engineering technology or electronics engineering technology may pursue secondary teaching certification.Savannah State has partnership agreements with 30 foreign universities in Asia, Africa, and the Americas and study abroad and exchange programs in 14 countries. SSU also offers a degree in global logistics and international business and is a host university to the Confucius Institute, a cultural and language exchange program.SSU offers an online bachelors of business administration in management, allowing for flexible class schedules and distance learning. Students can also complete their core classes online before beginning campus instruction in other disciplines. These offerings are part of the eCore system.Established more than 30 years ago, SSUs Marine Sciences Program is the only one of its kind in the state. The campus is located in a natural saltwater setting where students can conduct research in four environments: salt marsh, estuary, beach, and ocean. In 2013, the university received approximately $10 million in external (new and continuing awards) funding, which supports curriculum enhancement, faculty/student research, scholarships, conference presentations and other scholarly activities.
