Philander Smith College

Philander Smith College is a small, privately supported, historically Black, four-year liberal arts institution related to the Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church. The college offers four degrees: the bachelor of arts, the bachelor of science, the bachelor of business administration, and the bachelor of social work. The colleges mission is to graduate academically accomplished students, grounded as advocates for social justice, determined to change the world for the better. Philander Smith College, the only United Negro College Fund member institution in Arkansas, strives to provide a quality education for all regardless of race, religion, sex, national origin or ethnic background. The college has a summer bridge program to assist with the transition from high school to college for up to 100 new freshmen each year, the Philander Forward START program. The START program offers developmental courses in reading, mathematics and English as well general education courses in English Composition, Biology, College Mathematics and College Algebra, etc. to enable students from rural areas of the south central U.S. and urban areas to get a head START on their college matriculation and earn from 3 to 10 semester hours of credit at no cost to the students. The Philander Smith Management Institute (PSMI) responds to the needs of the non-traditional student by allowing them to complete a degree in as little as 18 months, by attending class one night a week, with small class sizes, convert prior learning, and graduating from an ACBSP accredited degree program.
