North Central College

Founded in 1861, North Central College is an independent, comprehensive college and community of learners dedicated to preparing informed, involved, principled and productive citizens and leaders over their lifetime. North Central offers more than 55 undergraduate majors and graduate programming in six areas to 2,750 undergraduates and 230 graduate students. The College is committed to academic excellence; a climate that emphasizes leadership, ethics, values and service; a curriculum that balances job-related knowledge with a liberal arts foundation; and a caring environment with small classes. It is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.Located in the historic district of Naperville, Ill.--identified as one of the nation's best places to live--North Central is 28 miles from Chicago's Loop. This proximity provides students with access to world-class cultural, internship and career opportunities, and allows the College to build distinctive programs.North Central students are awarded National Science Foundation Fellowships, Fulbright program grants, Congress-Bundestag Fellowships for Young Professionals and Goldwater Scholarships. The College was one of five schools nationwide recognized with a 2015 Senator Paul Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization by NAFSA: Association of International Educators. It is named a 2017 Military-Friendly(r) School. One of North Central's endowed professors received a 12-month Fulbright Scholar award to teach and conduct research at Yonsei University in South Korea. The College has earned recognition for its many sustainability practices, receiving Gold Status through the Illinois Campus Sustainability Compact and LEED Silver-certification for its Residence Hall/Recreation Center. The Center's solar photovoltaic panels is the second largest roof mounted array out of all four-year, private, liberal arts colleges with less than 5,000 students, according to the AASHE Campus Solar Photovoltaic Installations Database. North Central was named a "Green College" in The Princeton Review Guide as one of the most environmentally responsible schools in North America. In March 2017, the College opened a new 125,000 square-foot multidisciplinary Science Center with sustainable, cutting-edge technology. North Central's student-run radio station WONC 89.1 was named the Best Radio Station in the Nation in 2015 by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System. Each year, North Central ranks high in the number of students to present at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research and hosts its own Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research.North Central's all-college requirements include an intercultural seminar, a leadership, ethics and values seminar, and a religion and ethics course--important components to the integrative curriculum. Faculty and students collaborate across every field of study through year-round faculty-directed research, on-campus seminars, fieldwork and independent study. Students are encouraged to study abroad in 22 countries--from three-week to term-long or full-year programs. Six languages are offered, including Japanese, Chinese and Arabic. The College is committed to preparing teachers for at-risk schools, and its service learning includes community-based projects, courses and athletic programs. A Breakaway program sends hundreds of students to support service projects such as Habitat for Humanity, rebuilding communities hit by natural disasters or urban poverty. Students involved in Enactus help local entrepreneurs and international artisans create new markets and build successful enterprises.North Central offers more than 75 active clubs and organizations, providing opportunities in student leadership, sports and recreation, art, service, music and faith, and many honor societies. The school sponsors 26 NCAA Division III sports, and it has won 33 national team championships and 127 individual national titles. Cardinal pride is a way of life at North Central College.
