Newman University

Many students attending Newman University find there are key opportunities at Newman that set the Newman experience apart from other educational experiences. We are a Catholic University named for Cardinal John Henry Newman, one of the great scholars and educators of the nineteenth century. In The Idea of a University, Newman describes the purpose of the liberal arts is to inspire critical thinking, create lifelong learners, and expand the soul. Newman called for education based on enlargement, or the ability to connect ideas and create meaningful conclusions. Newman's educational philosophy could not be more relevant to the world we live in today, a world that in the words of Harvard scientist Edmund Wilson, is "drowning in information, while starving for wisdom."That is why Newman University launched an innovative and nationally recognized core curriculum, the Newman Studies Program (NSP). The NSP is built around the principles of active learning, critical thinking and interdisciplinary connections. So, regardless of the area of study, Newman University educators know all students receive a strong liberal arts foundation that prepares them for their next step, whether its the job market, graduate or professional school. Our quality graduates are proof a Newman education is valuable. Since our establishment in 1933, Newman University has played a major role in the education of physicians, nurses and other health care professionals throughout Wichita, the state of Kansas and around the world. Our health science graduates consistently score high on national licensing exams.Other Newman graduates also succeed and persist in their chosen fields. Seventy-five percent of Newman's teacher education graduates are still teaching in the classroom five years after graduation, well above the national average of 50 percent. Newman student work has also been recognized at regional and national competitions, with the most recent being in the areas of creative writing, script-writing and academic research. In addition, Newman graduates from a variety of disciplines are regularly accepted into top graduate programs across the country. Because of Newman's size, it is also easy for students to navigate campus clubs, organizations or volunteer opportunities and get involved in a variety of ways that grow professional skills such as leadership, organizational, and critical thinking. This interaction provides students with first-hand experiences that show them how they can make a positive difference and therefore put Newman University's mission of "transforming the world" into action. Our volunteer efforts have placed Newman repeatedly on the Presidents Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service to Americas communities. Newman received this honor in 2013, 2012, 2010, and 2008; and is the only university in Wichita to receive this honor four times. Its easy to be active at Newman University inside and outside the classroom. Newman is the only NCAA DII private institution in Kansas so there are always several men's and women's sporting events to watch. In addition, guest lectures by the Gerber Institute for Catholic Studies, the History Speaker Series, the Literary Festival, or any other number of events on campus provide opportunities to hear enlightening presentations. And, Fine Arts lovers can also enjoy the dynamic performances by vocal music and theatre groups. On top of it all, Newman professors want Newman students to succeed. And, that dedication to mentorship is greatly appreciated by our students - not only during their time at Newman but also throughout their professional careers as Newman University alumni.
