For more than 90 years, Murray State University has had a rich heritage of academic quality coupled with student success. The University's history dates back to 1922 when Rainey T. Wells presented the case for Murray, Kentucky to be the home of one of the new state universities. With Murray State's origins stemming from a hard-earned deposit of $117,000 from more than 1,000 individuals, Wells' vision led to a new normal school that would later become Murray State University. A caring atmosphere with a strong focus on rigor and excellence creates partnerships among and between faculty, staff, students, alumni and professionals to enhance the student experience. The University's Quality Enhancement Plan - Bringing Learning to Life - is an institutional priority and is anchored in the institution's mission. Experiential learning, study abroad programs and personal attention shown by faculty, give nearly 11,000 Murray State students the opportunity to succeed. Approximately 300 Murray State students studied abroad in more than 20 countries last year. Close to 800 international students representing nearly 60 different countries are enrolled in Murray State's undergraduate and graduate programs. Murray State University is a place for developing leaders in our community, the Commonwealth, the country and the world.Murray State programs are enhanced by several research and teaching facilities, including the Ray Science Campus; Hancock Biological Research Station; Watershed Studies Institute; Hutson School of Agricultures multiple research farms and equine facilities; nationally recognized veterinary diagnostic research center; Center for Telecommunications Systems Management; Mid-America Remote Sensing Center; Ross Mathematical Studies and Career Center; Centers for Banking & Finance, Economic Education, and Financial Planning; Speech and Hearing Clinic; and written and oral communications student support centers, among other facilities. As one of the best student-centered, comprehensive universities in the nation, Murray State offers students numerous opportunities. Students receive most of the big-time offerings of any large institution, but in a small and caring atmosphere in which personal attention from faculty and staff ensure student success. Students have the opportunity to receive academic scholarships based on a percentage of tuition, rather than a fixed cost. The model provides elasticity that families can depend on. The students have the ability to become involved in a welcoming Residential College system in which leadership and social and academic success are valued in a community-based living situation. The University offers an impressive 15 to 1 student to faculty ratio. Students truly become part of the University through involvement in a variety of student organizations - close to 160 total.
