Relating the liberal arts to a changing world, Loras strives to develop active learners, reflective thinkers, ethical decision-makers and responsible contributors in their diverse professional, social, and religious roles. Loras purposefully integrates community-based learning and Catholic Social Teaching into its curriculum for nearly 1,600 students.With more than 40 majors and minors, Loras College has consistently earned high placement in Best Colleges by U.S. News Media Group. As for the institutional experience, 96 percent of Loras seniors rated the College as excellent or good overall according to the National Survey of Student Engagement--7 percent higher than regional peer institutions. Numerous Loras programs are consistently ranked or recognized nationally--sport management, mediation, media studies, Dance Marathon, soccer and other athletic programs, just to name a few. Signature programs such as our master's in psychology, MBA, and programs emphasizing business analytics and STEM education differentiate Loras College and allow students to hone 21st century work skills at the undergraduate and graduate levels.Our students' commitment to serving others has earned Loras a place on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll since 2008, "with distinction" since 2009. In 2014, Loras College was the first college in the nation to receive the President's Award for Interfaith Community Service. Of the nearly 4,600 higher education institutions in the nation, Loras was solely selected due to its strong institutional commitment to sustain and build upon interfaith engagement and service grounded in the College's Catholic identity.Loras students are nothing short of extraordinary. Nearly 96 percent of the class of 2015 reported being employed or continuing their education within one year of graduation. Loras College is home to the Best All-Around Newscast in Region 7 according to the Society of Professional Journalists. The Loras College Dance Marathon has been recognized nationally as the No. 1 per-capita fundraising school since 2009. Now in its 11th year, the student-run event has raised more than $1.6 million for the Children's Miracle Network and the University of Iowa Children's Hospital. Our sport management students have won the Annual Sport Marketing Association (SMA) Conference academic case study competition an unprecedented four consecutive times and earned a championship 10 times this decade. Our English students continue their long history of success in the Delta Epsilon Sigma (DES) national writing competition, earning first, second and honorable mention this year.Other academic initiatives that are uniquely Loras College include: - Modes of Inquiry, an interdisciplinary seminar that introduces first year students to liberal arts learning through collaborative work with faculty, student peer assistants and student development facilitators. - The Center for Experiential Learning extends beyond traditional textbooks and classrooms to provide study abroad, internship and research opportunities to immerse students in a learn by doing model. - The Breitbach Catholic Thinkers and Leaders program allows students to examine the intellectual tradition of the Catholic Church through the study of great Catholic intellectuals such as Saint Thomas Aquinas and Saint Augustine, and modern day leaders such as Mother Teresa and Joseph Cardinal Bernadin. - The intensive Loras College January Term emphasizes experiential learning in an accelerated three-week term period. In addition to travel abroad experiences, students are engaged in courses such as Chemistry of Forensics, The Wonderful World of Animation, Women and Crime, Mathematics for Survival and Ireland in Film.
