CUNY--Hunter College

On September 10, 2012, Mayor Bloomberg announced Hunters new nursing, science, and health professions building to be built at 73rd Street and the East River in partnership with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).Hunter will build a Science and Health Professions building to upgrade its nursing and science facilities. Scheduled opening is 2017. Concurrently with this announcement, Hunter is embarking on other linkages with the hospital - providing clinical sites for our health professions students and providing education and training for MSKCC employees who wish to advance in their careers. In another example of Hunters commitment to its science and health faculty, students and programs, professors and students are developing exciting projects through our partnership with the NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Center at Weill Cornell Medical College. The collaboration has led Hunter to purchase a full floor in a new complex now under construction at Weill Cornell, just a few blocks from the 68th Street campus and very close to the new MSKCC location..The main Hunter library is undergoing extensive renovation. The third floor featuring an information commons, study centers and other meeting points for students will open this summer (2013). Construction on other library floors, to house a faculty resource center and student learning centers, will commence in the fall. The DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) Hunters second stand-alone doctorate (after the DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice), received New York State approval in July 2012. The program was formerly a joint degree between the CUNY Graduate Center and Hunter College.Hunters Brookdale campus at 25th Street and the East River (soon to be sold as part of the arrangement for the move to MSKCC) suffered severe damage during Hurricane Sandy. The dormitory had to be closed and the academic programs of medical lab science, physical therapy, speech-language pathology and nursing had to move to the 68th Street campus.Extraordinary efforts of the part of Hunters facilities, registrar and academic affairs staffs and faculty resulted in classes and labs being rescheduled at the main campus a week after the storm. The faculty took up temporary quarters in the Hunter library and, for the most part, classes were able to return to Brookdale in time for the beginning of the spring seme- ster. The dormitory reopened on December 8th.Hunters MFA in studio art will move to a new space in Tribeca in summer 2013, to replace the aging Times Square facility. Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute recently presented a symposium on Eisenhower "Ike Reconsidered" featuring remarks by David Eisenhower and Evan Thomas, and with a panel comprised of Jean Edward Smith, Stephen Hess, Rita Hauser and Philip Zelkow.Hunter, like the rest of CUNY, has revised its general education curriculum to conform to Pathways, a policy mandated by the CUNY trustees. The initiative is designed to create a curricular structure that will streamline transfers and enhance the quality of general education across the university. Pathways, or as it is known at Hunter, the Hunter Core, will be in place for entering first-time and transfer students in fall 2013. Having received a planning grant from the Mellon Foundation to help Hunter develop Arts across the Curriculum, the college has recently submitted a full proposal for this purpose to the Mellon Foundation.Simultaneous with Pathways, Hunter and all other CUNY colleges are undergoing a conversion of all electronic systems - personnel, accounting and most important student from old programs to a new platform, known as CUNYFirst (CI). Hunter is in Wave 3, the third group of CUNY colleges to convert to CI. Conversion will begin in March and we plan to conduct summer session registration on April 15th. This has been an enormous undertaking, involving many staff and many hours. We look forward to reaping the benefits of this new product.
