FMU is noted for its beautiful campus and its intimate academic community. Small classes taught by full-time faculty - not graduate students -- are a hallmark. Students enjoy unparalleled access to professors and the opportunity to forge lasting bonds that can shape both lives and careers. Faculty members regularly assist students in finding experiential learning opportunities, such as internships and undergraduate research opportunities. Students may also benefit from travel both in the U.S. and abroad. The university maintains exchange programs at 19 foreign universities in 13 different countries. All faculty members hold advanced degrees, and 83 percent of the Universitys full-time faculty hold terminal degrees in their field. The university offers more than 60 majors. Education, Business, Psychology and Biology are long-time favorites among students, and programs for which the university is rightfully renown. Industrial Engineering, which builds on the university's longstanding excellence in Physics and Mathematics, is a recent addition that is fast gaining popularity. Nursing and the Health Sciences is clearly the fastest-growing area of academic interest. The creation of FMU's new School of Health Sciences is an acknowledgement of that fact, as is the construction of the new Luther F. Carter Center for Health Sciences in downtown Florence. The state-of-the-art classroom and administrative center will house FMU's graduate programs in Nursing, Clinical Psychology and the new Physicians Assistant program. Additional medical specialties are in the pipeline. Created around a 19th century rail center, Florence remains a regional transportation hub. Interstates and major national rail lines converge in Florence, making it an attractive location for industry and commerce. More than a half dozen Fortune 500 companies have major manufacturing and/or warehouse presences in Florence, including Otis Elevator, Johnson Controls, GE, Honda, and Roche Pharmaceuticals. It is a regional retail center for the region as well. The Pee Dee area is on the edge of South Carolina's Low Country, and is crisscrossed with scenic rivers and marshes. It has long been noted a sportsman's paradise, drawing outdoorsmen from across the country to hike, paddle, hunt, and fish its unspoiled wilds.
