Eastern Mennonite University

Eastern Mennonite University is a four-year Christian liberal arts institution guided by the Anabaptist peace-oriented faith tradition. Located in Virginias scenic Shenandoah Valley, EMU prepares students to serve and lead in a global context. Mennonite students account for about 50 percent of EMUs enrollment, and more than 30 percent of its undergraduate students are children of EMU alumni. About 40 religious groups are represented on campus. Ethics, faith, and values are integrated into every course of study. Cross-cultural study -- usually a semester in another country -- and community service are required of all students. EMU offers 35 undergraduate majors and 37 minors, a seminary, a Center for Justice and Peacebuilding, and graduate programs in conflict transformation, education, counseling, business administration, nursing, and biomedicine. EMU professors -- most of whom have lived internationally -- challenge students academically and mentor them to follow Christs call to witness faithfully, serve compassionately, and walk boldly in the way of nonviolence and peace. Employers and graduate schools prefer EMU graduates because of the strong work ethic and moral integrity they offer. EMU has emerged as a leader in sustainability initiatives, from its environmentally-friendly Cedarwood and Elmwood residence halls, campus garden, Creation Care Council and full-time recycling coordinator to academic majors in environmental sustainability and peacebuilding and development. The largest commercial solar array in the state of Virginia, installed on the roof of Hartzler Library, has the capacity to generate 104.3 kilowatts of clean energy for the campus. EMU athletes compete in NCAA Division III sports. Regular chapel services and other worship gatherings are available at EMU, where students receive support for their faith explorations. Ministry assistants, community advisors and students in the graduate counseling program are part of the support network available to all students.
