Dakota State University

Dakota State University is a national leader in cyber education, offering technology-focused majors such as cyber security, cyber operations and network and security administration. We also offer technology-infused degrees in business, arts and design, science, math, English for new media and healthcare. A prime is example is our education program, in which all majors earn their K-12 education technology endorsement. Our students are exceptional leaders, having been awarded Google Women Techmakers and Goldwater scholarships, and Scholarships for Women Studying Information Security (SWSIS). Others have completed research work at top labs in the nation, such as the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the Georgia Institute of Technology. The Dakota State CyberCorps program, funded by a National Science Foundation grant, is the largest in the nation.Undergraduate and graduate students have opportunities for unique research projects, such as a collaborative project with a local healthcare system, in which academic researchers are studying real-time patient data to determine underlying causes for various illnesses such as cancer or diabetes. DSU student researchers have presented results of their scientific work at international conferences, including the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry World Congress (SETAC) and the American Society of Microbiology annual international meeting. Originally founded in 1881 as the first teacher education institution in the Dakota Territory, Dakota State University evolved into a premier technology institution after a 1984 decision to refocus our mission. Only twenty years later, our technology curriculum was recognized by the National Security Agency (NSA) as a Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Cyber Operations. The university now has four such distinctions, holding CAEs in Cyber Defense Education, Cyber Defense Research, Cyber Operations, and as one of four universities in the nation designated as a Consultation Cyber Defense Regional Resource Center. DSU is also the only university in the country that partners with the NSA National Cryptologic School. Through this agreement, NSA military and civilian employees may finish their undergraduate and graduate degrees in cyber operations. Faculty and students also run some of the nation's largest GenCyber summer camps for middle and high school students and teachers. With an enrollment of 3,190, students can choose the traditional college experience in a safe, supportive learning community on our 61-acre campus in Madison, S.D., or take the distance courses online as offered in a variety of majors and degree levels. Eighteen of DSU's undergraduate programs and all of our graduate programs are offered online. Both the on-campus and online degrees have been recognized for their quality and affordability. Students have opportunities to be involved in clubs or organizations such as the new Collegiate Entrepreneurship Organization, or CEO, which held their first Startup Weekend in 2017. Some groups correspond to specific fields of study, such as cyber defense teams or Teachers of Tomorrow. Students may also join the staff of the online-only newspaper "The Trojan Times," or the theatre club which brings awareness to national and global social issues through their productions. DSU graduates have high job placement rates, at or near 100 percent in respiratory care, health information administration, information systems and computer information systems, computer and network security/cyber operations, network and system administration, elementary education, elementary/special education, and secondary education - proof that a DSU education can lead to a rewarding future.
