Colby College

Founded in 1813, Colby is one of America's most selective liberal arts colleges. Serving only undergraduates, Colby offers an academic program rooted in the deep exploration of ideas and enriched by connections with Colby's world-class faculty. Students and professors work in tandem, pushing intellectual boundaries, testing hypotheses, and creating multidisciplinary approaches and solutions to complex scenarios. Research, internship, and global opportunities across the curriculum connect the liberal arts to the world. The Colby campus and its location in Waterville, Maine, provide easy access to premier research opportunities through partnerships with Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, the Up East Foundation, Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, and the Maine Lakes Resource Center. Exceptional facilities, including state-of-the-art academic buildings and labs and the finest college art museum in the country, enrich the academic program. The Colby Museum of Art and the Lunder Institute for American Art create unique spaces for scholarship, creative works, dialogue, and mentorship. More than 100 courses across the curriculum use the museum as a place for teaching and learning. Colby is redefining the liberal arts experience through DavisConnects. Complementing its focus on a classical, broad-based liberal education that requires deep inquiry, hones critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and encourages curiosity and lifelong learning, Colby now integrates a set of universally available experiences into the academic program. Several opportunities will allow students to connect their education to the world and the great challenges of the 21st century while preparing them for future success in graduate schools and careers.DavisConnects guarantees a global experience for all students, making Colby the first leading liberal arts college to provide funding for every student to spend time abroad. Ultimately, Colby will connect every student to a facilitated and funded set of internships and research experiences, offering all Colby students an exceptional and unique set of opportunities that will deepen their education and improve their life outcomes.Building on its historic leadership in environmental education, Colby has created the Buck Environment and Climate Change Lab to connect students from many disciplines to organizations in Maine and beyond that are focused on environmental issues. One of a handful of carbon-neutral colleges, Colby earned the second-highest 2015 sustainability rating among 260 schools, based on scores from the Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS), the premier sustainability assessment in North America. A new solar field provides 16 percent of the College's electricity. Multiple capital improvements have recently been completed or are underway. A partnership with the city of Waterville is making the downtown a vibrant, dynamic destination; a mixed-use development on Main Street, with housing for 200 students, faculty, and staff focused on civic engagement, will open in 2018. New synthetic-turf fields are available for baseball, softball, lacrosse, and soccer, and work has begun on a new athletic complex. The College is in the planning stages for a new arts and innovation center.Through the Colby Commitment, Colby pledges to make the College accessible to the most-talented students regardless of their financial need and to meet 100 percent of calculated need with grants, not loans, in financial aid packages. The applicant pool for the Class of 2021 was the largest, most academically prepared, and most diverse in Colby's history.
