Coe College

Coe College is a private, nationally recognized four-year coeducational liberal arts institution that has provided educational opportunities for students in a residential setting since 1851. The college offers superb academics and exciting co-curricular activities in a thriving urban setting that promotes student growth and success. Coe has a national reputation for academic excellence enhanced by a student-centered, highly supportive campus environment. Coe's vibrant Cedar Rapids location provides an abundance of internships for students and career opportunities for graduates. The college's distinctive liberal arts tradition, coupled with out-of-class experiences, gives each Coe student a well-rounded education and solid preparation for the future. It is the mission of Coe to provide students an education of superior quality that aims at preparing them for life following graduation. Our reason to exist as an institution is to ready students intellectually, professionally, and socially to lead productive and satisfying lives in the global society of the 21st century. Year-after-year, nearly 100 percent of reporting Coe graduates were employed or in graduate school within one year of graduation. The college's unique and progressive academic requirements blend the traditional liberal arts with real world experiences and research with a personalized approach. Coe is one of the few liberal arts colleges in the country that requires an internship, research and/or off-campus study. This hands-on learning provides the experiences for our graduates to excel. Coe's Cedar Rapids location provides myriad internship opportunities. Nationally, Coe students have interned at places like Corning Incorporated, the Mayo Clinic, the Chicago Board of Trade, and many others. In addition, faculty and student collaboration on research projects is commonplace at Coe. In terms of off-campus study, Coe offers a wide variety of programs, ranging from study-abroad opportunities in Europe, Africa, South America and Asia to domestic programs in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Chicago, among many other locations. In addition, Coe is home to the country's largest undergraduate, student-run Writing Center and a writing-across-the-curriculum program that provides students with the written communication skills needed to be successful after graduation.Coe has become a national leader in the production of Fulbright Scholars when compared with colleges and universities across the county, with 23 awardees in the past five years alone. This continues a rich tradition of Coe students, alumni and faculty who have received Fulbrights over the years. With one of the leading undergraduate science programs in the country, the college has received NSF research grants continuously since 1986. Since 2000, Coe has garnered nearly $9 million in funding from the NSF to support scientific research and equipment, as well as the renovation of Peterson Hall of Science. Coe is currently one of only a handful of small colleges in the U.S. to host a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site, also supported by the NSF, which provides opportunities for students from Coe and other colleges across the country to conduct research in chemistry and physics.Service-learning in the community is also essential to the Coe experience. Coe is routinely named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, representing the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteerism, service-learning and community engagement.Coe is in the midst of the largest capital project in its history, one which will provide unparalleled benefits for future generations of students while creating pride among all Kohawks. Make Your Move - the Campaign for Eby and Hickok - includes $23 million in essential campus enhancements. The result will be vastly improved academic, recreational, wellness and competition facilities.
